A Coast That's Already Moving
Vermilion Parish was losing ground before anyone drew a launch pad on it. Both things are true at once, and the honest version says so.
We sell t-shirts about rockets. You should know that before you read this one, because it means we have an obvious reason to be enthusiastic, and enthusiasm is not the same thing as accuracy.
So here is the uncomfortable half of the story, stated plainly.
The coast was already going
Coastal Louisiana has been losing land for a century, for reasons that predate anything SpaceX is doing and have nothing to do with it: leveeing the Mississippi cut off the sediment that built this coast in the first place; canals cut for navigation and oil and gas let saltwater into fresh marsh; subsidence pulls the ground down while the sea comes up; and storms take out in a day what took decades to accrete.
Vermilion Parish has been on the receiving end of all four. Anyone who has been here thirty years can point at open water that used to be marsh, and at marsh that used to be pasture.
That is the baseline. The project is arriving on a coast that is already moving.
What that means for the honest questions
The environmental question about Starbase Louisiana is not “will this destroy a pristine wilderness,” because that framing is wrong on both ends. It is a working coast with a long industrial history, and it is a coast under real stress.
The useful questions are narrower and harder:
Does the footprint accelerate loss, hold neutral, or help? Large coastal construction can do any of the three. Fill and canals accelerate. Well-designed projects can include marsh creation and hydrologic restoration that genuinely slow it. Which of those this becomes is a design and permitting outcome, not a foregone conclusion.
What happens to the refuge system and the flyway? This is a nationally significant wintering ground for waterfowl. Launch cadence, noise, and lighting at the scale described are not nothing, and the environmental review is the place where that gets quantified rather than argued about.
Who bears the risk of a bad storm? A hardened industrial site changes local hydrology and drainage. Sometimes that protects neighbors and sometimes it pushes water onto them. The people downstream of the answer live in Forked Island and Esther and Intracoastal City.
Does the money come back to the coast? $25 million a year is enough to fund serious local drainage and restoration work — if the parish chooses to spend it that way. That is a local decision, and it is going to be made in ordinary public meetings that almost nobody attends.
Why we are not picking a side yet
Because the information that would justify a confident position does not exist yet. The environmental review has not been done. The footprint has not been published. The mitigation plan has not been written.
What we can do in the meantime is refuse the two easy stories — that this is free money with no cost, and that it is a catastrophe visited on an unspoiled marsh. Neither is true, and the people selling either one are not going to be here in 2031.
